7 Reasons Why I Use a Paper Planner

September 15, 2016 Roni Loren

I post about planners a lot. I know many of you probably think I'm ridiculous. And I am--unapologetically. But even though decorating my planner has become my hobby (some people scrapbook, I buy washi and planner stickers), I don't do this for the relaxing hobby. That's just a side benefit. The real reason I use one is because it's vital to my day. I'm running a business, writing, and being a wife and mom. It's a lot to keep track of.

But why a paper planner?

1. I have the memory the size of a garden pea.

I blame pregnancy. After I had my son, I think he took my memory with him because he can remember EVERYTHING (like to a freakish degree.) And I can't remember last week. But if I don't write something down, it's gone. The planner keeps me from forgetting the important stuff.

2. Electronic calendars don't work for everyone.

Yes, they have all kinds of fancy calendar and productivity apps and programs. That's what I tried to use before this. I learned quickly that once it's typed in, it's dead to me. I'm extremely visual so if it's not in my face, it doesn't exist. And when I set reminders, I'd just close them and then forget again. However, once I write something in my planner, even if it's not in front of me, I remember things better. Research has shown that writing things down helps us remember them and process them better, so there's some science to that.

3. I can't hide from it.

Yes, technically I can close my planner, but I don't. It sits open in front of me all day. There is no ignoring it. I can see clearly what I should be doing and that "mess around on twitter" is not on the To Do list.

4. Checking things off is highly satisfying.

It just is. I do something. Check mark! Maybe this comes from being a please-the-teacher student as a kid. I want the A. I want that checkmark. I don't want to look down at the end of the day and be left with a bunch of empty boxes and pending items.

5. Planning out each week makes me more intentional with my time.

Instead of sitting down and thinking, What should I do today? I already have my plan in front of me. On Sunday every week, I sit down with my planner and map out the week. Yes, there are surprises that will come up, but I have an outline of what I want to get done that week. How many words I need to write. Who I need to email. What promo I need to do. When I need to blog. What I'm cooking for dinner. What's going on with the family. With all those decisions out of the way, it clears my mind to do what I need to do and to be creative.

6. It keeps a visual record.

When did I turn in that thing? When did we go on that trip? I told you about my memory. So it's very helpful to have a physical record of what I've done. I can look back and see how many words I wrote in a month, what derailed me, where my time went, etc. And flipping through pages is way easier than scanning through an electronic calendar looking for that stuff.

7. Pretty things motivate me.

This may not be important to everyone, but for me, having something lovely that holds my plan makes me more likely to use it and stick with it. I look forward to decorating it and making it fun. It makes me smile when I see it.

Those are my main reasons, but there are so many more. The key is finding what works best for YOU. My husband is a die hard electronic calendar guy and it totally works for him. (He also has a great memory, so that helps.). Other people rather a simple list on a steno pad. Whatever works.

But if you want to give the pretty planner a try, it's launch season for 2017 planners. Here are a few that launched this week and some others. (IWP and Day Designer are affiliate links but I don't rec anything I haven't bought for myself and loved. And I haven't been asked to feature them.)

New 2017 Planners

1. Inkwell Press (Get 10 dollars off with my link)

This is my planner of choice right now and is the one I've stuck with the longest. I just ordered my 2017 one and I couldn't be more excited. Gorgeous design. Thick paper. And the layout totally works for me. I use the three boxes each day for Blog post, Dinner, and Word Count (see the pic at top of post), but you can use them for whatever you want, which is the beauty. And I divide each day down down the middle to separate appointments or events (on the left) and my to do list (on the right.)

2. Day Designer

I used Day Designer for a while and it's a beautiful planner and is perfect for someone who needs a daily layout instead of a weekly. So if you have a lot of daily appointments or you like to write out your full schedule along with your to do list, this is a great option. It's also nice to track your time after the fact to see where your day went.

3. Happy Planner

You can get these at Michael's and Hobby Lobby, often with a 40% off coupon. They are colorful with great paper and designs. It's also a disc bound system so you can move pages around. I used a Happy Planner for a while and really liked it, but eventually figured out that a horizontal layout worked better for me than vertical. They've since come out with a horizontal but I like the Inkwell Press layout better still. This is a great option though and is cheaper than many of the others.

4. Erin Condren

I haven't personally used an Erin Condren, but I've looked at them at Staples and they are lovely. They are also the first brand that launched the decorative planner thing.

5. Plum Paper Planner

This is another one I haven't used but have heard great things about. You can customize with a number of different layout options and I've heard the paper is very high quality.

Hope that helps! Anyone getting a new planner for 2017? Do you use a planner? An electronic calendar? How do you keep your life straight?

Giveaway & Interview: The Hard Men of the Rockies Series

September 13, 2016 Roni Loren

Every now and then I like to feature authors you may not have had a chance to read yet. So today I'm bringing you five authors from my local RWA group who are starting a new connected series called Hard Men of the Rockies! I haven't had a chance to read these yet, but I had the ladies stop by and answer a few questions and they've been kind enough to offer us a giveaway!

To get a chance to win a book from each lady, sign up for their mailing list.

First, a quick peek at what the books are about...

RED LACE by Kym Roberts

He knocked on death’s door, but she refused to let him walk in…

Ty Beckinsale was a dead man…until an angel in red lace saved him and disappeared into the night. Tortured with memories but unable to pursue leads to determine her identity until after he recovers, Ty seeks the assistance of the experts at Achilles HeAl, a private physical rehab facility for the rich and famous. Or in his case, the infamous—an ex-Secret Service Agent hell-bent on avoiding the media. His road to recovery, however, leads him straight to the woman he can’t forget—a woman he vows to protect from a past he can’t leave behind.

Fear consumes her, drives her to build walls no one can penetrate…

Secrets and lies have driven Faith Artino to turn her business into a compound. She’s secure, safe and satisfied with life. Until Ty Beckinsale walks in and knocks down all her barriers with a chemistry she can’t deny. But her fear of betrayal stops her from seizing the moment and from taking what she wants more than anything else—a passion so strong, it can’t be destroyed.

A life-time sentence of loneliness awaits, unless Faith opens her door to the one man who’s stolen her heart.

TANGO & LACE by Misty Dietz

World renowned geoarcheologist Jackson Whiteside has come home to Colorado to care for his grandmother and teach at CSU…not to rekindle the passionate, but doomed love affair with gramma’s high-spirited neighbor whose memory has haunted him half-way across the globe. But the moment he sees his feisty, melodramatic ex, his cortisol levels spike. And he damn well knows he’s about to unearth more layers of their relationship…whether his neurotransmitters like it or not.

If there’s one thing dancer and dispatch operator Mya Castillo can do well, it’s Tango. But dancing with her feet is one thing…dancing with her heart is another. Especially when she has no choice but to accept her ex— the world’s most unintentionally sexy professor—as her stand-in partner for the biggest performance of her life.

Jack’s two-year scientific immersion has kept a tight lid on his right-brained proclivities, but his irritatingly illogical gut is telling him the attack on Mya’s dance partner jeopardizes more than just her dance studio. It bodes evil toward the woman he still loves beyond reason, so this is one dance he won’t sit out.

LEATHER & LACE by Brynley Bush

NFL bad boy Knox Beckinsale has made headlines one time too many. Injured, suspended from the Torpedoes, and needing to clean up his image—fast—he heads to Fort Collins to help his Grandma Rosie after her heart attack. No women. No parties. No trouble. Until he meets Leila Patton, who’s nothing but trouble with big blue eyes and a girl next door demeanor that does nothing to hide curves that could make a man forget his religion.

Knox Beckinsale is cocky, arrogant, and sexy as sin—everything unemployed journalist Leila isn’t looking for in a man. Which makes him absolutely perfect for banishing the memory of her former boyfriend who broke her heart—and fired her. But one night turns into another, and before long Leila realizes there’s more to Knox than just a pretty face and killer abs.

When secrets from Knox’s past surface, Leila is forced to choose between writing the story of a lifetime…or taking a chance on her own love story.

BEYOND LACE by Mia London

Colorado was the last place on earth he wanted to be.

Blake Strickland has a good life in Chicago. His first company sold for several million dollars, and he’s on his way to repeating that with his second. But when his grandmother has a heart attack, the return to his home town of Fort Collins, Colorado is unavoidable and unwelcome. It’s the place he’d fallen madly in love with an incredible woman—the same place Charlie ripped his heart right out of his chest.

Charlotte Brookfield put love behind her, or so she thought. Until he returned—to her town, in her bar, a thousand miles from his home. And looking sexy as hell with a chip on his shoulder so big, she knew, she was still his enemy.

Eight years apart has done nothing to ease their pain, and everything to ignite their passion. Can Blake build a firewall around his heart, or will Charlie leave an indelible imprint on his soul?

BLACKMAIL & LACE by Tracy A. Ward

Grayson Montgomery is on a mission and bad boy Adam Holder is on the top of her bucket list. When the successful defense attorney mistakes her for an old flame, Grayson doesn’t hesitate to use a misleading video to bring him to his knees and blackmails him into a trip he would never make. Duty-bound to a deathbed oath, Grayson doesn’t count on the intense attraction between them or how much she’s falling for the sexy bachelor.

Adam Holder loves women, but he loves success even more. He would never jeopardize his career, until a case of mistaken identity makes him look guilty of a crime he’d never commit. Not willing to take a chance with his future, Adam submits to the blackmail of a beautiful woman while plotting his revenge…but when their sparks of passion ignite, Adam forgets his thoughts of retaliation and risks it all to win Grayson’s heart.

The Interview

Question: Who decided on the theme of the series? How was it decided?

Answer:

KYM: We wanted something to reflect on the reader conference we were planning to attend in Colorado, and since I have an obsession with a certain Rock, I was all in for The Hard Men of the Rockies. ;)

MISTY: Exactly! Plus we thought a family-theme built around gramma sounded like a hoot.

TRACY: The theme was set, and the rest of us just fell in line :-).

Q.   What was the most fun in working with 4 other authors on this series?

A.    KYM: Our texts. OMG, they were hilarious and X-rated. Definitely not something we could allow our kids to read to us while we drove. ;)

MIA: Definitely!

BRYNLEY: It was also fun seeing my characters in the other books. Knox, the hero in Leather & Lace, is the little brother of Ty, the hero in Red Lace.  I remember being amazed at how well Kym nailed Knox when she sent me an excerpt from Red Lace that included him.

TRACY:  The constant support from my fellow authors was also an added bonus. I just recently went through a cross-country move after living in Dallas for 20 years (and in the same neighborhood for 16). I knew collaborating on this project would be a major incentive to stay focused on my writing. The Chick Swagger girls were exactly the kick in the pants I needed!

Q.   What’s it like writing in the same world with 4 other authors?

A.    BRYNLEY: Chaotic, but totally fun. I'm used to making unilateral decisions for my books and characters, but in the Hard Men of the Rockies series, all of the books take place in the same house and with the same grandma, so we had to make sure we communicated and got our facts straight across all of the books.  If one author had Grandma Rosie driving a red Jeep, we all had to make sure we did the same.  And when I gave Rosie a cat, I had to make sure none of the other cousins were allergic to cats. J

MIA: I was the last author to join the group, and initially I was overwhelmed with the facts to keep track of—the who, what, where, when, and with whom? The first thing I did was construct a spreadsheet with some facts we could all refer to. I think I helped, especially when we had some overlap of characters in each other’s books.

Q.   What fun/interesting research did you do for your book?

A.    KYM: I based my Ty, on the strengths of the alphas I met while working a task force with the Secret Service.

MISTY: I enjoyed learning more about Tango dancing - I danced a little bit of it when I was a Zumba instructor. But most of what I used in the book came from watching a lot of YouTube videos on technique as well as the heart and soul of what Tango is.

BRYNLEY: Knox in Leather & Lace is an NFL player, so I to look at lots of hot football players in tight pants in the course of my football research...But I did it for my readers! I'm selfless like that.  I also had to make sure I deleted my search history, which included topics such as "how much is a sex tape worth" and "extortion 101."

TRACY: Because Grayson, the female protag in Blackmail & Lace, is on a mission to fulfill a deathbed promise and complete the bucket list she inherited from her dead sister, I had to tap into my adventurous side. Tomorrow is guaranteed to none. I had to think about some of the things I wanted to do/accomplish before I die. Researching the Inca Trail and diving the dangerous underwater caves of Jacob's Well were just a couple of the adventures I skimmed the surface of. It really made me wish this was a full length book, rather than novella!

MIA: For me, I’ve been to Colorado only once. I needed to brush up on the topography, climate, the university, all that. CSU fans will see truth in Beyond Lace. Also, I learned about rock-climbing as that is Blake’s favorite pastime (maybe second favorite).

Q.   What was the biggest challenge in collaborating with 4 other authors?

A.    MISTY: Making sure the details of the house were consistent as well as the timing in the Christmas epilogue scene.

BRYNLEY: Trying to get everyone's approval and input on everything when we all had our own deadlines, schedules, life, etc. I'm pretty sure I was the slacker. I owe everyone drinks.

TRACY: Time! Everyone works at a different pace and I was always the one lagging behind. :-)

Q.   Do you see doing more series like this in the future? Why or why not?

A.    MIA: Definitely. I love the collaboration and idea-sharing. Plus I think the readers will love to see the characters they “know” weave in and out of each other’s books.

KYM: That was our goal when we started last year. This is the second series by Chick Swagger. We hope to make it an annual event, and who knows we may expand our releases to coincide with different reader conferences throughout the country!

MISTY: Making a series collide with a reader event is a lot of fun and generates a lot of synergy at the event’s book signing. Would definitely do it again.

TRACY: I would love to. Maybe next time we'll rent a cabin somewhere and meet for a week to knock out our first drafts. That would be so much fun!

A Screw-With-Your-Head Read: All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood

September 12, 2016 Roni Loren

I was supposed to do a lot of things yesterday. House cleaning. Laundry. Run errands. Instead, I spent most of the day immersed in this book and only managed to go grocery shopping so we wouldn't starve this week.

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood was one of my Book of the Month Club choices. It was actually a pick from last month (but you can choose old picks). I didn't get it the first time around because I wasn't sure I wanted to read the subject matter. But then I saw a number of people (whose reading tastes generally align with mine) recommending it, so this month I grabbed it.

I'm glad I did. This was one compelling read.

First, a warning. This is not an easy book to read. It doesn't hold back and is very dark. However, at its heart, there's also love. Love that will leave you with uncomfortable mixed feelings most likely. But isn't that the best part of a well-written book? It leaves you thinking. It leaves you questioning your own feelings about the story and the characters.

I won't go too deep into the plot, but I know most of you who are reading this are romance readers, so if you want to know if this is a happy ending or not, scroll to the bottom of the post to see under the spoiler heading. If you don't want to be spoiled. Avoid that. :)

I'm still processing my own feelings about this book, but I think my biggest takeaway is that we can't ever know what it's like to be in someone else's shoes. We make judgments. We know what's right unequivocally. Or we think we do. But is it always so cut and dried? I don't know. Hence the uncomfortable feelings.

It made me think about my days as a social worker. I did therapy with middle school aged children from very difficult backgrounds. Some had seen and been through so much, I could barely wrap my head around it. So reading about Wavy, I couldn't help but think, I met girls like her. Thirteen year olds who'd walk in my office with the eyes of a hardened adult. Ones who would often get involved with boys much older than them. They'd grown up too fast because they'd had no other choice. It was do that or not survive. Did they make bad choices? Often. Could I blame them? No. Would I have reported Wavy and Kellen to the police if she'd walked in my office? Absolutely. I did that very thing a number of times in that job. And I'd still do it every single time without pause if I were still doing that job.

So if I were in this book, I'd be one of the antagonists (like her aunt.) But the story made me root for Wavy and Kellen. So...yeah. It's a book that effs with your head. That's one reason I read dark books. I don't mind a book messing with my lines. Fiction gives a space for that. But I also know that's not for everyone. So, you've been warned. : )

But if you decide to pick it up, you're going to get one hell of a read.

Here's the blurb:

A beautiful and provocative love story between two unlikely people and the hard-won relationship that elevates them above the Midwestern meth lab backdrop of their lives.
As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house, until one night her star gazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.
By the time Wavy is a teenager, her relationship with Kellen is the only tender thing in a brutal world of addicts and debauchery. When tragedy rips Wavy's family apart, a well-meaning aunt steps in, and what is beautiful to Wavy looks ugly under the scrutiny of the outside world. A powerful novel you won’t soon forget, Bryn Greenwood's All the Ugly and Wonderful Things challenges all we know and believe about love.

Grab a copy or you can still get it through Book of the Month Club (sign up with my link and code REFER 50 and get 50% off a three month membership.) I have to say the hardback version is lovely. Gorgeous cover and that nice soft feel to the jacket. (Yes, I pet my books. Don't you? ;) )

Has anyone else read this? What books have you read that screwed with your head or made you question your feelings?

My Deep Love for Book Mail: The Book-of-the-Month Club

September 8, 2016 Roni Loren

I don't have to state here that I'm a book nerd. There's not much I love more than a new book. But recently I realized that there is something super comforting and nostalgic about certain book acquisition methods.

First one that clearly comes to mind is going to the library. I would venture to say that most of us who love books discovered this love in the library first. We were the kids who would beg to go pick out new books every week or two. I can still remember browsing the shelves and desperately hoping they had the next installment of the Wrinkle in Time series but then also finding three other things I HAD to have too. I still get that warm fuzzy feeling walking through stacks in the library.

Next is bookstores. I grew up with Waldenbooks and B. Dalton like I'm sure many of you did. No trip to the mall was complete without a trip to the bookstore (and the record store, lol.) And I still love walking through a B&N or small bookshop. It's just comforting to be surrounded by so many books.

But in addition to library visits and bookstores, I realized this week when kidlet came home with his Scholastic Books flyer from school that those book orders were where I first fell in love with book mail. I would skim through all those colorful pictures of new books and want them all. My mom would always buy me something even when I know her budget had to be super tight, and then I'd have that lovely wait until they came in. They used to stack the orders on the teachers desk but wouldn't give them out until the end of the day. I can remember being so excited that one of those packages was mine. New books!

Book mail was special. It was the promise of new stories, new worlds, new adventures.

And though I get book mail constantly now with my Amazon Prime membership, that doesn't feel the same. I still get excited when a book arrives, but it's packed in there with my Lara bars and coffee filters or whatever, lol. It's less of an experience, more of a utilitarian method of receiving something.

But then I discovered the newly revamped Book of the Month club. It's been around for almost 100 years but was recently acquired by someone new and they changed a lot. Instead of mail order catalogs, everything is handled online with a very simple and streamlined process. I saw it mentioned on a blog somewhere and they had a discount code for a trial period. Even though it was books that are normally outside my typical reading zone and I rarely buy hardcover books, I thought--what the hell, I'll try it out.

And you know what? I LOVE it. It's brought back some of the ritual of book mail for me. You get to anticipate which books they're going to select each month (there are 5 picks each month and you can also choose from previous picks). It's like--ooh, it's the first of the month, I get to see what they've selected! And then you choose your book (or more if you want, which you get at a significant discount) and then they arrive in lovely packaging with a notecard from the judge describing why they selected it. Usually there's some little extra in there, too--a curly straw for summer, a wine koozie, etc. It's special. And I realized it has brought back that book mail feeling I used to get from the school orders. Plus, I've discovered this new love for hardbacks. Weird.

Here are this month's picks. I chose the Amy Schumer book and I added All the Ugly and Wonderful Things from the previous month because I've seen it recommended by a few people and need to read it.

Now, if you're interested in this, I do have a referral link that will get you a 50% off discount. I'm passing that along. If you want to get in for the September selections, they let you choose up until Sept. 15. Here are the details:

As a BOTM member, you'll choose from 5 new literary gems each month - powerful,  immersive books that you might not have heard of otherwise. We'll deliver your choice right to your doorstep. Use invitation code REFER50 for 50% off a 3-month membership. Join today and discover a better way to read.

And yes, that is a referral link which earns me extra books, but as I've mentioned before, I don't promote anything here that I'm not genuinely enthusiastic about. Plus, this one is a win-win because you get a great discount. :)

So now I want to hear from you. Anyone else nerd out about book mail? And what rituals/memories do you have near and dear to you about getting books? I'd love to hear them!
